ALTITUDE MEDICATION – 28 Tablets (ACETAZOLAMIDE)

Description

Overview

Acetazolamide is a medication primarily used to mitigate and treat altitude sickness. It is important to note that not all trekkers and climbers will need this medication, and it should not be taken without proper assessment.

Indications

• Prevention and Treatment of Altitude Sickness: Acetazolamide helps the body acclimatise to high altitudes and can treat sleep disorders related to altitude.
• Dosage for Acclimatisation: 125 mg (half a tablet) twice daily.
• Dosage for Sleep Disorders: 125 mg (half a tablet) two hours before sleep, can be increased if necessary.
• Note: Acetazolamide is not a sedative.

Acclimatisation Guidelines

• Under 3000 metres (10000 feet): Spend at least one night at this altitude before ascending further.
• Above 3000 metres: Do not increase sleeping altitude by more than 300-500 metres (1000-1500 feet) per night.
• General Rule: For every 1000 metres (3000 feet) ascent, sleep at that height for two nights before ascending further.

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness

• Mild Symptoms: Headache, fatigue, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.
• Severe Symptoms (requiring immediate descent): Severe headache, clumsiness, odd behavior, continuous vomiting, blurred vision, confusion, and signs of HAPE or HACE.

Emergency Procedures

• Severe AMS, HAPE, and HACE: Immediate descent is vital. Descent should be at least 500-1000 metres (1500-3000 feet) and as soon as possible.

Additional Information

• Altitude Problems: Can occur at altitudes above 2500 metres (8000 feet).
• Precaution: Do not ascend with symptoms of AMS and consider descending if symptoms persist.
